A Mountain of Opportunities With CFMA

My experiences have brought me through a number of industries and companies. Throughout these adjustments, I have always tried to stay alert to the possibilities that an opportunity can bring. Not only is it important to be open to opportunities (even if you don’t take advantage of them), but some can even be life changing.

At my first job in the construction industry, I worked for a controller who shared what CFMA was and told me that I should join. CFMA was not even 10 years old at the time, but I was impressed by the connections I could make and the vibrancy of the Philadelphia Chapter.

I could immediately see the value in the education provided and the possibilities of networking; however, I wasn’t sure I wanted to stay in construction so I left the industry for several years before returning. When I became CFO for another company in construction, I immediately rejoined CFMA.

Upon my return, a past president of the Philadelphia Chapter encouraged me to volunteer. And it is one of the best things that ever happened to me.

Engagement in CFMA has led me to grow in many ways. I’ve benefitted from the education I’ve received through local chapter presentations, the Annual Conference, and on webinars. I’ve also gotten a lot of education through my connections in the Association — members passing along good information to other members.

I’ve also been introduced to incredible Associate Members who have been helpful to myself and my company. I would even point out that, when going back into a job search in 2017, I had several opportunities come my way due to connections I had developed through CFMA. In fact, I obtained my current job through the connection of a long-time CFMA friend.

Also, earning my Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional (CCIFP) designation has helped me demonstrate that I have the knowledge of and experience in the industry. I have even used that in testimony during legal proceedings to convey my level of competency.

I am very grateful that my predecessors in CFMA worked so hard to create the Certification and ensure its legitimacy.

So, I encourage you to take the opportunity to read through this issue of CFMA Building Profits and increase your knowledge.

Better yet, if you haven’t done so already, register for CFMA’s 2023 Annual Conference & Exhibition to take advantage of “A Mountain of Opportunities” that await, such as:

  • Educational opportunities
  • Networking opportunities
  • Information on products and services available to our members and their companies
  • Volunteer and leadership opportunities in CFMA, at both the local and national level
  • Learning more about the CCIFP designation

While I appreciate our history and always take the opportunity at the Annual Conference to seek out and thank David Casey for his work to create CFMA, I see that the future of the Association is very bright with the engagement of members like you.

I look forward to my opportunity to serve you as CFMA’s Chair in this upcoming year.
